I'm a huge fan of Victor's novels - so I'm usually a lot happy when a new book is released. This time I liked the story a bit less than the previous one (the character is changing a bit - some scenes are less great than others) but it fulfills what I enjoy reading all the same: clever lines, a complex plot, cool and hard characters, extreme situations, lot of planning, fighting and action, a certain body count and, well, Victor. That - well - he's changed and he's changing. And I like this and I don't like this at the same time.
Now I got another year to wait to see what will happen next

A really great book. First and last chapters are a warm and poetic and I simply love them - because they remember me about my younger self, reading this kind of novel, eons ago.
The rest of the story is different kind of joy: a clever crime plot (we're looking for a jewel thief) with lovable characters, on a train travel from Paris to Istanbul, with twists, a lazy police officer, and well a super cool nun.
Of course, this is a book for teenagers. But this doesn't mean it's not a nice experience even for older readers.

In my opinion, probably the best case for detective Chopra so far as a whole, with the best mystery part. And Poppy has a greater role in this book and her wit and behavior add an intriguing tone to the narration, without of course changing too much the Baby Ganesh Agency typical structure - that contains also a lot of insights of ancient and modern India - that I love to read - and elephant Ganesh interventions.
A book I'd suggest to every reader of the previous ones, but also to whom just want to read a fun and well-written mystery novel with an original and interesting setting.

La mia impressione è che questo libro abbia un numero non piccolo di problemi di trama e stile e avrebbe bisogno di una buona revisione.
Ma il punto è che io l'ho divorato in soli due giorni ed è inutile che quindi non ammetta che mi è decisamente piaciuto molto.
Sì, forse principalmente per i tantissimi riferimenti pop anni '80 e legati al mondo dei videogiochi. Ma a rifletterci è facile che sia anche per la struttura (sempre anni '80) della storia che, anche se a tratti suona inaccettabile confrontata con altre letture, risulta confortevole e familiare e mi ha decisamente catturato.
Consigliato - sicuramente a chi come me è nato negli anni 70.

Decisamente una delle migliori cose del suo genere che mi è capitato di leggere in questo ultimo periodo.
Belli, fedeli e suggestivi di disegni di New York (difficile credere che sia la prima graphic novel a colori dell'autore!), personale e intrigante la resa grafica dei personaggi, poetica (anche se con alcune motivazioni peculiari) la storia e assolutamente notevole la sceneggiatura.
Più che consigliato.

This book is a rare joy - a novel about books and writers (and, well yes, thieves, and insurance agencies and FBI - and a "lousy spy" - that's simply realistic and adorable). I loved the reading more than the plot (that's nice and solid, but I loved the dialogues between the characters so much more) and it's the reason I give "only" four stars to such an enjoyable story.
Not sure it can be good enough for all Grisham's hardcore fan (the legal part is minimal) - but I can't help but suggest every one of you to read this book.

Il libro è bello, intrigante e, per certi aspetti, anche utile per comprendere alcune dinamiche sulle difficoltà di interazione razziale e su una realtà (quella dei quartieri "ghetto" americani di oggi) di cui so pochissimo. Ricco di tanti personaggi differenti, e l'idea di fondo è che la maggior parte abbiano sfumature e una complessità per cui un giudizio immediato non possa che essere parziale.
Si parla infatti di razzismo (un po' bianchi vs neri, ma anche bianchi vs orientali e, non poco, neri vs bianchi) ma la maggior parte dei personaggi è "normale" e plausibile, e non è (salvo rari casi) "cattiva" ma solo "superficiale" (nel senso che non pensa abbastanza alla situazione reale per comprendere che il proprio atteggiamento non sia corretto) e spesso pronta ad ammettere, almeno un po', di avere sbagliato quando comprende meglio le cose.
Un bel romanzo di formazione (ed è un romanzo, non un manifesto di propaganda, o una inchiesta) e sarò curioso di vedere quanto cambierà quando, credo a breve, sarà trasposto sul grande schermo.
Una ultima nota: difficile non notare similitudini tra la comunità nera proposta nel libro e alcuni atteggiamenti comunemente luoghi comuni "italiani" (non ultimi i rituali legati al guardare le partite, ma anche alcune discussioni sul cibo) e ricordarsi quindi che tutti siamo un po' simili a tutti - su più punti di quelli che possiamo immaginarci

I've been looking forward with the idea of reading a novel with Agatha Christie as the main character since I've found, by chance, the plot of "A Talent for Murder" on a library store. The author is an expert about this writer, and his idea is thrilling, covering the few days in which Mrs. Christie (really) disappeared before Christmas in 1926 with an untold (and murderous) adventure, that would lead to a potential set of following stories.
But despite I appreciated very much the basic idea, I could not say I really loved this novel. The villain, for instance, didn't seem to be completely credible, and his plans seemed almost surreal for more than one aspect. And a lot of other things seemed to me at least not polished enough.
This doesn't mean I disliked the reading (I mean, I found a lot of things appealing - above all some minor character) but only that I wanted more from such a great idea. I wished for a better and clever Christie - one that I supposed could be in the next book (A different kind of evil) where the plot won't be (I guess) so tied to real events like the one in this first one.

Profondo e toccante, in qualche modo generazionale, e forse la più adulta delle sue opere fino ad ora - migliore direi pure di Kobane calling. Ma questa cosa di dividere le opere in due parti (questo volume avrà un seguito l'anno prossimo) mi sembra stia sfuggendo un po' di mano :-)

It's a bit hard to tell my opinion about this book. I loved all the characters (and yup they're a lot!) and many scenes are great. The writing is flawless (even if sometimes even over my pay grade - I'm not a native English speaker and this has been the hardest book I've read this year) and every place, every action was 100% King style - that I adore. But I didn't like too much the plot itself. Not the starting idea (that was cool) - but the "reason" - the male/female thing is ok, but it gets too much fairytale-ish - that fits well so much with the other stuff related to shrinks & bazooka shooting - at least for me.
Not too oddly this didn't prevent me to like the book - because everything else was good - the subplots (the characters live action) were compelling and at the end, the Why is not the most important feature when the What is page turning and when the people in the book seems so real that you feel sorry for some of them when things get crazy as they get.

Well, I've been excited reading most of the chapters of this new Dan Brown novel but, as it happened with The Lost Symbol, I really couldn't stand the final - the mistery behind - the reason for everything. I could not say it's a horrible book because it's not. I loved the idea, most of the action, and I enjoyed the long art description pages too. I found good most of the characters and I think Dan Brown now writes even better than before (and I've liked him since his first books, even the ones without Robert - and I read them all in order) but while I loved Inferno finale (the book's one, not the movie's...) here I found the final explanation - that should be earth-shattering - almost risible. I mean, really? C'mon!

Ammetto, colpevolmente, di ricordare molto poco il cartone animato che hanno trasmesso quando ero piccolo, e quindi la lettura di questo tomo con l'opera completa (comunque differente dalla serie TV) mi ha lasciato assolutamente sorpreso. Opera appoggiata su un background ricco e ampio, estremamente cupa e "violenta" anche a livello psicologico, forse non omogenea in tutti i punti a livello di ritmo ma coinvolgente e suggestiva. E con un finale notevole.
Il tratto non è particolarmente curato - ma questo è l'unico particolare che mi aspettavo anche prima di aprire il volume, e non è (almeno per me) necessariamente un problema.
