Storia di un ludopatico

Libro scorrevole, molto piacevole da leggere, finito in tre giorni. Rispetto ad altri romanzi di Jules Verne la storia sembra molto più plausibile, senza espedienti fantastici o fantascientifici, il che permette al lettore di immedesimarsi di più nei protagonisti e riuscire a seguire meglio la storia. Il linguaggio non è complicato neanche in lingua orginale.

Godel demonstrated that no complex mathematical system was complete. In other words, no matter what axioms are chosen, meaningful mathematical statements can be made whose truth or falseness can never be demonstrated within the system.

Godel's second discovery was even more devastating. He demonstrated that it was impossible to prove that any given complex mathematical system was consistent. In other words, you can never be sure that the set of axioms won't lead to a contradiction. On the Richter scale of mathematical discoveries, Godel's was a 10.

As Andre Weil, number theorist extraordinaire, put it: "God exists since mathematics is consistent, and the Devil exists since we cannot prove it."

Un libro molto pop, stracolmo di aneddoti sulla matematica. La vita di Erdős viene presa come spunto per parlare di alcuni tra i matematici che hanno fatto la storia, plasmando il mondo attuale. Non ci sono parti tecniche e difficili, anzi, il libro è adatto a chiunque voglia provare anche solo a sfiorare cosa sia la matematica e quei geni che ci hanno lavorato. È stato piacevole leggere di matematici che avevo giusto sentito nominare nei miei studi, in relazione a un teorema utilizzato giusto una volta e conoscere meglio che personaggi fossero. Tra gli altri vengono nominati Abu Ja'far Mohammed ibn Musa al-Khowarizmi, Russel, Hermite, Fermat, Poincaré, Kronecker, Hilbert, Gödel, Fibonacci, Ramanujan, Leibniz, Pascal, Gauss, Eulero, Riesz, Nash, Galois, Riemann… E problemi celebri come il Knapsack Problem, il problema di Monty Hall, le Analisi di Monte Carlo, il Teorema dei 4 Colori, le Equazioni Diofantee, il problema del Travelling …
