Philip Pullman: The Rose Field

The Rose Field is a fantasy novel by Philip Pullman. It is the third volume …

What about an end?

It could have been more than 4 if the ending wasn't such an anticlimax leaving so much still to be worked out. It feels like pullman has not yet made up his mind completely on what he's going to say with the book theme or maybe he still wants to write about our lyra and then others so it's just a goodbye... who knows... maybe we have to follow the Dust

Chiang is full of very brilliant ideas, seeds of excellent story seeds that could blossom into wonderful narratives. But it seems to me that he is more in love with the idea of showing off these seeds than actually growing them (that takes hard toiling). And if I am not mistaken he has also acknowledged as much in some interviews. Would be more 3.5 stars but some ideas are damn good.

It would be 2 stars but damn Kuang knows how to write. I guess I worked myself up a bit after Babel but that's a steep cliff to fall from. Anyway... Too much romance and too much banality for my sake, but then again an Alice and a Peter chasing down logical rabbit holes, I should have expected banal. I guess I will have to wait for her next novel to see if she rises back to the high standards she herself has drawn. Still to be honest there is a lot of good and interesting ideas in the book, but there are parts of it frankly too much akin to psycholove drama. Not my corner, simple as that ;)
