Convenience store woman

I remember reading it for the first time on a train journey from Edinburgh in 2022, and thinking this was fun! Its idiosyncracy was freeing, and I found it comforting—this idea of life with a well mannered routine, made up of cues. Was my life a feedback loop too? Then I read it again cos Kirti was reading it, and found that it was kind of eerie. It refuses any consolation but also does not allow you to pity Keiko (at least I could not—but why not?)

Quando lessi La ragazza del convenience store a suo tempo, appena ventitreenne, lo commentai come segue:

Un piccolo spaccato di vita giapponese, dalla prospettiva di una protagonista molto sui generis. Sospeso fra tragedia e racconto di maturazione. Davvero appassionante.

Ora che trascrivo la recensione su Bookwyrm, senza neanche doverlo rileggere, mi sento di aggiungere questo: la protagonista non è solo sui generis, è una donna probabilmente neurodivergente che si rivendica di vivere la cazzo di vita che vuole e vaffanculo le aspettative sociali. Keiko eroina universale, porcogiuda!
