Post-war #Italy must have been pretty hardcore:
A man's youngest son falls deathly ill, and the physicians tell him that "only God can help him now!" Then he commands his family to pray, and when his son gets worse, he goes to the village priest and tells him:
"Only you can make God understand that my son is dying, and that he needs to help him!
And if my son doesn't get better: Well, in this package I have five sticks of dynamite from the mines, and if my son doesn't survive, I will blow up the church!"
I mean, yes, this book is a work of fiction, but even fiction has to seem reasonably plausible to the audience...
