Più che onesta fantascienza militare

Per l'ennesima volta avevo da occupare un viaggio in treno e mi sono rivolto a zia C.L. Moore e zio Henry Kuttner e avendo (finalmente) letto tutti i loro materiali science fantasy mi sono fiondato sulla loro space opera – nello specifico, sul primo dei due romanzi del ciclo "venusiano" o "delle Fortezze", appunto Clash by Night. Che dire, un degno passatempo per occupare un paio d'ore: classica fantascienza militare a base di contrattazioni diplomatiche e scene di battaglia, più qualche scena riempitiva di "uomini machi che fanno cose da machi" (che miracolosamente non diventano moleste), moderati infodump che descrivono il clima soffocante e la fauna letale del pianeta Venere (come del resto era tradizione a inizio secolo scorso), e soprattutto personaggi relativamente approfonditi e credibili rispetto alla media, ivi comprese le due donne interesse amoroso – in particolare mi ha deliziato il tema di fondo di "civiltà guerriere …

Ho poi trovato deliziosa l'enfasi sul pericolo dell'energia atomica, bella testimonianza di cosa potessero pensare i civili statunitensi nel 1943. E niente, mi sa che prossimamente leggerò pure l'altro romanzo delle Fortezze, Fury.
