The Jungle Book (1894) is a collection of stories by the English author Rudyard Kipling. Most of the characters are animals such as Shere Khan the tiger and Baloo the bear, though a principal character is the boy or "man-cub" Mowgli, who is raised in the jungle by wolves. The stories are set in a forest in India; one place mentioned repeatedly is "Seonee" (Seoni), in the central state of Madhya Pradesh. A major theme in the book is abandonment followed by fostering, as in the life of Mowgli, echoing Kipling's own childhood. The theme is echoed in the triumph of protagonists including Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and The White Seal over their enemies, as well as Mowgli's. Another important theme is of law and freedom; the stories are not about animal behaviour, still less about the Darwinian struggle for survival, but about human archetypes in animal form. Composito, coeso, profondo... e imperialista

Dopo Peter and Wendy ho proseguito la mia lettura di classici per l'infanzia ottocenteschi con il primo Jungle Book e pure questa volta mi ha spiazzato che la vulgata, frutto di adattamenti di adattamenti, non rispecchi minimamente l'opera originale. Innanzitutto, il testo di Kipling non è un romanzo di formazione unitario dedicato al famoso Mowgli, il bimbo della giungla antesignano di Tarzan, bensì una raccolta di racconti di animali parlanti di cui metà sono effettivamente avventure di Mowgli, metà sono vicende autoconclusive sempre di ambientazione indiana, e l'ultima (ma, significativamente, centrale nella disposizione) si svolge in aperto Oceano Pacifico. In secondo luogo, nel ciclo di Mowgli i tipi umani ipostatizzati dagli animali parlanti sono totalmente sfasati rispetto a come ce li vende da decenni l'adattamento disneyano: la tigre Shere Khan non è un avversario meramente prepotente, bensì fedifrago ingannatore e vigliacco, ed è con astuzia e violenza spietata che Mowgli …
